Dear Andrew Wiggins,
Today is Friday, April 26, 2013. There are four months until the first day of classes for the 2013-14 academic year. There are five and a half months until Midnight Madness across the country. Four months and five and a half months. We’ll be looking at brackets. We’ll be talking pre-season rankings. We could do it now… except we can’t. Why? Because we have yet to find out where the Number 1 player from the high school graduating class of 2013 is going to play next year. Yes, we are five and a half months from getting our first look at next year’s teams and you are “undecided.” Well, sorry to blow up your spot, Andrew, but it’s time to tell them the truth. Attention UNC, UK, KU and FSU: this kid is playing you. The only thing this kid is undecided about is when he is ready to let this circus that serves his ego come to a conclusion. Sorry, Andrew… but it needed to be said.
“He’s waiting for the NBA draft entry deadline”, they say. Are you? OK, let’s look at your four schools: UNC, Kentucky, Kansas and Florida State. Is there a single player on any of those four teams that is still mulling an NBA decision? And if there is (there isn’t), is there any kind of impact that said decision would have on you? No. First, there isn’t a player mulling this decision and second, even if there was (there isn’t), it would have zero effect on you. So, let’s have them all curb that talk right now.
The next train of thought that has recently been passed around is that “he is exhausted from this recruitment circuit” and therefore has not been able to decide yet. Really, Andrew? You’re 18 years old. You want to play in the NBA. And this is too much for you? It’s too much to have the entire nation, particularly four huge fanbases, at your beck and call? This is too much pressure for you? Well, then as a DUKE fan, let me just say I am glad DUKE wasn’t on your radar. I prefer the players on the team that I pull for to thrive under pressure; not buckle under it. Recruiting is hard for you? And you want to go step into the shadow of Michael Jordan? Or play in front of Big Blue Nation who demands a title every year? Good luck, buddy. And hello… you reclassified! You decided to bump up your college a year and you can’t decide? Well, then why did you even reclassify? So you could hurry up being indecisive? As my friend- my die-hard UNC friend (see: www.jumpupgetdown.blogspot.com/) said to me today with regards to this fiasco: “Go back to high school, kid. Go to prom.”
Look, full disclosure here: a part of me is of course just trying to make good out of a lesser situation. You, the player regaled as the greatest since Lebron, are never going to play for DUKE. And what’s worse, 3 of the 4 teams you are still deciding on will be on DUKE’s schedule next year (the only one not guaranteed to play DUKE is Kentucky). So, my disdain for you (out of pure respect, of course) is only getting started. But, really; it’s time to decide. It’s time to let the world all know what you most certainly know. It’s time to put on your big boy pants and step into the spotlight. Jabari did it. Harrison Barnes did it before that. And now you need to too, Andrew. We’ve all stroked your ego enough. So, what’s it gonna be? We are, as we have been for so long now… waiting.
Love,
BlueInThe212
PS: Please don’t pick UNC.
About Me
- BlueInThe212
- I grew up in Durham, North Carolina. I did something when I was 22 that changed the game: I moved to New York City. I live, breathe and bleed DUKE University, namely DUKE basketball. Krzyzewski is an added word to my spell-check dictionary as I use it nearly everyday. I met my Boston-born wife, Ariana, a DUKE grad, in NYC, during grad school, when we both worked at a restaurant together... named Duke's (zero relation). My first name is Sarah - with an "h", my middle name is my Grandmother’s maiden name and my last name (apparently) means Goose of the Forest.
